The Historic Rice Mill Wedding Venue

January 17, 2017

Historic Rice Mill weddings are some of my favorites!

Over the past few years, I’ve had the absolute pleasure of photographing many weddings at the Historic Rice Mill in Charleston. It’s truly becoming my favorite venue for so many reasons. I’ll first start with just how simply gorgeous the place is. If you like old exposed brick, aged wood floors, and pressed tin tile ceilings then this is the place for your beautiful Charleston wedding. Also, the fact that it is on the water makes it quite perfect. You get a historic building and coastal scenery complete with boat docks as your wedding backdrop. Boom! The whole place has a classic Charleston historic vibe.  It’s just great! Here’s a look at the outside of the building.

This Charleston Venue has a lot of versatility.

Another thing that I love about the Rice Mill is the layout of the place. Most weddings that I’ve seen there have been set up in such a way that really allows for the guests that just want to sit and chat to do exactly that without distraction and the ones that want to dance all night to have that ability as well. There’s one whole side of the building that is usually set up with tables and chairs for eating. The bar side of the building is where the dance floor usually is and a gorgeous sunroom in the middle of it all for whatever your heart desires. I’ve seen this room set-up mostly as the cake room/lounge area. The Rice Mill also offers a few outdoor areas for ceremonies or just more space for your guests to relax. The great thing about it is that it’s super flexible.

In my experience with weddings at the Historic Rice Mill, I’ve seen the two back decks used for ceremonies and cocktail hour. The front of the building can be used as a ceremony location as well. It’s a beautiful setting complete with large oak trees that would provide a decent amount of shade for a summer wedding at the Rice Mill. This place is so versatile you just can’t go wrong with it. I’m a sucker for versatility and really old buildings.

If you love history…

Speaking of historic, this beautiful Charleston wedding venue was built in 1861. Yeah, you read that right. It’s 0ver 150 years old. This rice mill is the only one left of Charleston’s three antebellum rice mills that are still standing. In it’s past it served as a seaplane terminal and a Navy minesweeper base. Pretty cool!

The Rice Mill is perfect for bridal portraits!

I had the pleasure of doing a bridal portrait session at the Rice Mill and it blew me away with how perfect it was as a backdrop for bridal portraits. I think the bar and the sunroom were my two favorite spots for this type of shoot. The sunroom, in particular, provided some beautiful natural light with its windows on all sides.

The food at the Rice Mill is definitely something to talk about.

Lastly, the Historic Rice Mill has their own catering company, Good Food Catering. Their food is AH-mazing!! The name says it all but it is so much more. Because I love things that are simple and easy, I absolutely love that you can have your venue and food picked out all at once. Two really difficult things to choose sometimes…but book this place and they’re done. Check.

Seriously though, I have had plenty of meals at this venue in Charleston and all have blown my mind. I’m not even sure you can get better food at your Charleston wedding than what they have to offer. Okay, Charleston is pretty well known for its food too….so that might be a bit of a super personal opinion, but the food is really good! I can’t mention the food and this beautiful building without also mentioning that the staff is so great!! They’re really helpful and super nice!

Just go ahead and book your wedding there. You know you want to.
